Late afternoon into sunset. Noon on the coast means hard overhead glare and squinting, then the last hour before sunset gives you about twenty minutes of the best golden light in California. We time the ceremony and portraits around that window rather than around the caterer.
Cielo Farms and Malibu Rocky Oaks sit up in the hills with vineyard and canyon views, Calamigos Ranch covers the wooded ranch look, and the Adamson House at Malibu Lagoon gives you tile work and ocean right there. Each has a very different drive and parking situation, which is worth checking early.
More than people expect, and it affects the film more than the photos. Wind off the water hits microphones hard, so we mic the ceremony with that in mind and position for it. Veils and light florals also move, so it is worth a word with your planner about the setup.
