The day
Both of them in black, head to toe. She wore a one-shoulder gown, he wore a three-piece with a bow tie, and the whole session ran inside a city hall arcade where the plaster goes almost white in afternoon sun. A bottle of champagne came out and got poured standing up on the walkway, two glasses clinked in tight. Two frames in the set are given entirely to four hands resting on her stomach.
How it was shot
A white building and an all-black wardrobe pull in opposite directions. Expose for the walls and the suit becomes a hole; expose for the fabric and the arches blow out. I metered off his lapel, let the plaster sit bright without clipping, then held the shape of her gown back in the grade. The belly frames were converted to black and white on purpose. Skin, fabric and rings read as one tone that way, and nothing competes with the hands.
