The day

Most of this film lives in strong daylight and one dark room. It opens at home with the curtains pulled back, the bride standing between her parents in a lace-sleeved gown with a tiara pinned into her veil. From there the day moves out to open hillside at the end of the afternoon, then to a memorial lawn where the two of them kneel side by side and set flowers down, then indoors to a reception with string lights and purple wash behind the couple.

How it was shot

Three lighting situations in one day, none of them alike. At the house we used only what came through the windows and let the glass blow out to keep the faces right. On the hill we shot late into the sun and flagged the flare so skin held color instead of going milky. The graveside was covered from distance on a long lens with no direction given at all. Reception LEDs at that saturation wreck skin tone, so white balance was set by hand on the floor and fixed again in the grade.
